What Is Manx Cats?
manx1

A Manx cat is a tailless cat from the Isle of Man, giving this breed its name. This tailless breed is the result of genetic mutation. They are bred from one tailless parent and one tailed parent. From a health perspective, cat owners should become aware of the potential of unique health problems related to the spine, spinal cord, and tail along with any special cat care and handling.

Did you know that a cat’s tail is critical for balance? So how can a Manx cat balance itself to walk effectively?

manx2Researchers believe that they have especially sensitive vestibular apparatus inside their ears to overcome this genetic trait. The vestibular is the sensory system that provides a sense of balance and spatial orientation to move effectively.

Why Is Dog Food So BAD for Cats?

Cat care incudes making the best food decisions for your loving kitty. Cats have DIFFERENT nutritional needs than dogs. A snap-shot of four important differences are listed in the table below.

Item

Cats Dogs
Vitamin A Cat food MUST contain Vitamin A.

Some dog foods may or may include vitamin A.  If it does, it may not be the appropriate amount needed for cats since dogs can make vitamin A with beta carotene from which their bodies can turn it into vitamin A.

Taurine

(An amino acid)

All cats REQUIRE taurine to prevent heart disease. Dogs can make taurine on their own, therefore, many dog foods may be deficient in taurine.

Arachidonic Acid

(A fatty acid)

All cats NEED arachidonic acid.

Not essential for dogs, yet dogs can build arachidonic acids themselves.

Protein

To ensure a healthy cat, the protein levels are HIGHER than dogs require

Protein levels may be high in dog food, however, not high enough for cats to remain healthy.

Why Should The Type Of Water Bowl Matter?

Why Should The Type Of Water Bowl Matter?
water

Did you know that cats have very sensitive whiskers and typically don't enjoy putting their face all the way into a bowl? Cats depend upon you to ensure that the water bowl is filled to the brim and is wide enough that their whiskers are not negatively impacted.

Did you know cats can be just as finicky about their water as
they are about their food? Cats are also sensitive to the water
taste and temperature. Taste can be tainted by dirty bowls in addition to polluted
water. Ceramic or stainless-steel bowls have surfaces that inhibit bacterial growth and
tend to keep water cool. Daily pet care that includes cleaning your cat’s water bowl and
filling it with filtered water can minimize pollutants and increase drinking.

Do you know what the “right” water bowl temperature is for your cat? Every
cat’s preference is different. Consider including observation and a trial and error
process to your regular cat care practice. Experimenting with different options such as
room temperature water, refrigerated water, and bottled water can help to determine
what “fluffy” likes best so that he/she can stay hydrated and healthy.
